WhatsApp announced that they will increase efforts in removing accounts from their user base that use the app for malicious intent, like sending scam links or other harmful things to unexpecting users of the app.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular chatting apps in the world with over 65 billion messages sent almost every day and it has a user base of 1.5 billion people.

Most commonly WhatsApp is used for sharing chats or media with friends or family, but there are also those who decide to use the app’s services for spreading spam and scamming.

Recently a WhatsApp-related scam was reported that tried to trick users into sending their personal information to criminals by making them think that they received some verification codes.

Now WhatsApp is increasing efforts to stop people from using the app in ways that could harm other users. WhatsApp has stepped up its ability to detect those who might be using the app in malicious ways and as a result, this is allowing them to remove 2 million WhatsApp accounts every month.

They also announced that by the end of this year WhatsApp will be taking legal action against people who misuse this app. In an updated version of their FAQ page, it is stated that they will not tolerate the usage of WhatsApp for spam.

This crackdown on its user base should significantly reduce the amount of spam WhatsApp users receive. WhatsApp will use all that is within its power to make the app safe and clean from malicious links and spam, they are committed to reinforcing the private nature of the app to keep its users protected from spam and unknown messages.

Advice On Spotting Scam Messages:

  • The sender of the message claimed to be affiliated with WhatsApp
  • The message instructs users to forward the message further
  • Claims about protecting you from punishment if you forward the messages
  • Messages include random rewards or gifts that are supposedly from WhatsApp or other users

If you receive these kinds of messages, WhatsApp advises you to block and report the sender.
